Our Vision

AAIE's mission is our declaration of identity and purpose. It names who we support, what we're here to do, and what we believe is possible when school leaders are courageous enough to imagine something better.

We gather throughout the year because the work of envisioning better schools doesn't pause. We learn together because no single leader has all the answers. And we lead with integrity because the students in our schools deserve nothing less.

Connect. Inspire. Lead. Three words that describe both what AAIE does and what it believes: that when leaders find their people, stretch their thinking, and step more fully into their purpose, everyone in their school community benefits.

Our Strategic Plan 

In February 2026, the AAIE Board of Trustees adopted a refreshed strategic framework to guide the organization through its next chapter. Built around three interconnected pillars, the plan reflects what members have been asking for.

Pathways are about leadership development at every career stage, from the aspiring head finding their footing to the experienced head navigating board relationships and global complexity. Partnerships are about building mission-aligned alliances with organizations that expand what's possible for our members. Programs are about designing learning experiences that are responsive, relevant, and continuous, not just a moment at a conference but a steady current throughout the year.

The framework is anchored by a simple through-line: Connect. Inspire. Lead. Everything AAIE does traces back to those three words and the thriving community we hope to nurture and grow.

 

GOAL ONE:  Pathways

Design and sustain leadership development pathways that inspire, mentor, and grow current and future leaders across the AAIE community. 

ACTION ITEMS

  • Foster growth across all stages of leadership:   Create and sustain opportunities that support leaders wherever they are in their journey, from those just stepping into leadership roles to seasoned executives guiding complex international schools.

  • Support leaders navigating complex global realities:  Provide resources, connections, and experiences that address the unique challenges international school leaders face - cross-cultural dynamics, governance, transitions, and the demands of leading globally diverse communities.

  • Build a connected community of practice and belonging: Cultivate spaces where leaders across the AAIE community can share wisdom, learn from one another, find encouragement, and feel genuinely supported in their work and growth.

 

 

GOAL TWO:  Partnerships

Nurture mission-aligned partnerships for high impact. 

ACTION ITEMS

  • Seek partners who advance leader growth and capacity:  Intentionally pursue relationships with organizations, institutions, and individuals whose work strengthens the ability of international school leaders to lead with purpose, confidence, and impact.
  • Collaborate to expand access to leadership support globally:  Work with partners to extend AAIE's reach and ensure that leaders across all regions, contexts, and career stages have meaningful access to development resources and support networks.
  • Align partnerships with shared values and member needs: Continuously evaluate and nurture partnerships that align with AAIE's mission and remain genuinely responsive to members' needs, ensuring that every collaboration serves the community.

Develop and continuously improve learning experiences that are responsive to member needs. 

ACTION ITEMS

  • Design experiences that inspire and equip leaders:  Develop opportunities that are meaningful, relevant, and energizing for international school leaders at every stage - from those stepping into leadership for the first time to those shaping the future of global education.
  • Respond to the evolving needs of members globally: Stay attuned to the changing realities of international education and ensure programs reflect what leaders actually need, adapting continuously so the community is always well-served.
  • Sustain a culture of continuous learning and improvement:   Embed reflection, growth, and innovation into everything AAIE offers, modeling for members the same commitment to lifelong learning that great leaders bring to their schools.

The Work We Do

Through weekly conversations, annual gatherings, leadership institutes, and year-round programming, AAIE connects ideas, perspectives, and people across the international school world.

Our Pathways work meets leaders where they are. Whether you're stepping into your first senior role or leading a complex school through uncertain times, AAIE offers the peer communities, coaching, and development experiences to help you grow with intention. Our Partnerships extend that reach, connecting members to a curated network of mission-aligned organizations, thought leaders, and collaborators who make our community stronger and more resourceful. And our Programs are designed to respond, to the questions leaders are actually asking, the challenges schools are genuinely facing, and the futures worth building together.

We promote current educational practice, futures-focused thinking, and honest conversations about what it means to lead international schools. We work globally, across hundreds of schools and dozens of countries, because we've always believed that when school leaders grow, students benefit. That conviction hasn't changed. How we act on it keeps getting better.
