GOOD GOVERNANCE PROJECT

All Day Sunday, February 5, 2023

The goal of this workshop is to provide a general understanding of the roles and responsibilities of a Trustee on an international school board. The session will be framed around seven essential questions, based on the Association for the Advancement of International Education (AAIE) Board Development Curriculum, which describes the work of an international school board.

Developed as a framework for board development, this compilation of responsibilities provides a foundation for sustaining and enhancing good governance in international schools. The session will be conducted as an exploration of key concepts in good governance.

The facilitators will present a brief overview of each element of the seven questions, prompted with materials drawn from board development work, welcoming comments and questions from the participants.

THE STORIES WE TELL OURSELVES

Using the Assessment Process to Examine Equity, Values and Narratives

Half day afternoon, February 5, 2023

Independent schools love to tell stories about themselves. Mission statements, diversity statements, admissions & marketing materials…all of these center on the school’s most explicitly stated values.

  • But how do we know if our school community’s implicit values align with how we officially describe them for all the world to see?

  • Can we know if the behaviors and beliefs of the people in our community reflect the explicit values stated in our official documents?

  • Can we stand behind the stories we tell about ourselves, particularly with regard to our efforts in the Equity space?

In this interactive session (half day afternoon), participants will consider the role of the Pollyanna assessment process to examine these questions and bridge the gap between explicit and implicit Equity values in school communities. We will show that the Pollyanna Assessment process not only measures community engagement but also helps to build community engagement.

STRESS REDUCTION AND REJUVENATION:

A RETREAT FOR INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL LEADERS

Half day morning, February 5, 2023

This half day morning session is intended to assist participants in using mindfulness practices to foster rest, renewal, and stress reduction. In cultivating a sense of presence from moment to moment, and being open to any experience, whether evaluated as pleasant, unpleasant or neutral, this retreat is an opportunity to practice mindful attention, for the express benefit of one’s wellbeing. Derived and adapted from the Mindfulness-based stress reduction curriculum, this retreat is accessible to all people, especially beginners to mindfulness.

This session is being offered by Dr. Paul Richards free of charge, for participants who are interested in spending a transition day before the full AAIE conference begins; those people who are willing and able to invest in their own well being–touching on mental, physical, and emotional health–as an act of self-compassion.

“Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare.” (Audre Lorde)

Please bring a yoga mat if possible.
