F3 Friday's Five Ideas for the Future
April 3, 2020 STICKING TO THE KNITTING For the Friday Five (F3), we're sticking to the basics. When the heat is on, it's best to seek to simplify that which is complex and to keep drawing on your leadership toolbox. Our idea is to keep adding to your perspectives and skill sets.
With thanks to long-time international school leader, Bob Hetzel, we are featuring two of his finds within the leadership literature. And of course we're adding a few of our own.
Almost every successful person begins with two beliefs: the future can be better than the present, and I have the power to make it so. –David Brooks
Now on to Friday's Five... 1. Four Behaviors in a Crisis–(Thanks to Bob Hetzel) An HBR article that highlights, with key leadership considerations, four behaviors that should take center stage when leading a company or a community during and out of a crisis. Solid and highly implementable advice to use as the next wave of the unexpected hits you broadside. We spoke of this article in a recent Covid-19 Briefing. 2. A Military Perspective on Achieving Stability (Thanks to Bob Hetzel) In a time of crisis, we seek a sense of order and stability. There is a discipline for framing the questions that trouble you the most, like, "What are the new expectations of my school community when the new school year begins." It also means overcoming the debilitating nature of uncertainty. 3. Leading Learning in the time of coronavirus as we seek the synchronous and asynchronous balance– What ARE THE COMMON SENSE AND DAILY LIFE PRIORITIES FOR DIGITAL LEARNING. From our good friends at GOA, a blog post with a truckload of essential advice to share with your teachers. 4. There's No Overstating the Challenge. Listen in on an interview between EARCOS executive director Ed Greene and the good people of TIE. One gem that Ed provides is, "Many international educators are intrepid souls and have the patience to wait out certain periods of challenge. Recruiting is always a challenge, but this year, for many Heads, the challenge has been larger than normal." 5. And we end this week with an OPEN LETTER, recognizing the courage of those in the health care profession, who run to the ICU to treat those in need. It is a metaphor for us all. We all must make our own personal contribution to the well-being of others. * Just as we are sensitive to the challenges of the coronavirus concerns–F3 will only focus on leadership learning and we'll ensure you receive our every-other-day coronavirus update as a separate publication.
