A 2019 Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) UPDATE #18
For March 1, 2020 News Update There are now 58 countries reporting COVD-19 confirmed cases, up from 51 countries two days ago. Infections are reported on five continents, inclusive of Oceania. Cases have increased by 50% in Italy and a number of airlines have suspended service to Milan.
To emphasize, on 28 February, WHO raised the risk assessment for spread and impact of the COVID-19 outbreak internationally from "high" to "very high."
The World Economic Forum (a Yale study et.al.) offers a view about the human psychology of pandemics. The research indicates that when uncertainty about human welfare is emphasized – for example, how much others might suffer (children, the elderly) from an infection – people strive to prevent the worst-case scenario. The idea here is that within our school communications, because so much uncertainly exists, it is important to be specific about the human cost when sacrifice and caution must be observed.
Finally, we hope you will read the most recent Bill Gates BLOG that seeks to answer the question, "How to respond to COVID-19?" He covers the brief history, the science (from proteins to nucleic acids) and finally the politics of a pandemic. In past years, the Gates Foundation has focused resources on preparation for the next pandemic.It may be here.
Readings for Today With a suggestion that you cut to the "discussion" section, the New England Journal of Medicine provides a research/medical perspective on COVID-19 disease characteristics. An editorial, also from the NEJM provides a good summary that can support messaging to your school community.
The CDC published a few years ago a readiness guide for a flu pandemic. Take a look as it provides a checklist, from infrastructure to messaging. Another leadership tool for your toolbox.
Finally, the Harvard Center for Communicable Disease Dynamics presents the case that COVID-19 will not just go away as warmer temperatures are upon us.
