A 2019 Novel Coronavirus (2019-nCoV) UPDATE #8
For February 10, 2020
As of 10 February, no new countries reporting cases of 2019-nCoV in the past 24 hours (WHO).
Of the 40,544 reported infections, 309 cases (one reported death) are reported beyond the borders of China.
We are also reviewing the number of NEW cases being reported from one day to the next. Whether the infection rate is slowing remains uncertain. New infections seemed to peak between February 4-5, yet today's WHO report indicates an uptick in new cases. (See graph below using WHO reported data)
We speak of common-day flu, which each day claims more victims than the novel coronavirus. So why the concern? Scientists are unsure of the pathogenic potential of 2019-nCoV. There is no immunization and there is no experience with this new virus. It is the unknown potential, where spread in China is rapid. (see article below)
News reports state that a WHO team is being allowed into China to observe and support local authorities.
