The situation report from the World Health Organization for January 28, 2020 indicates over 10,000 confirmed and suspected cases in China–across all provinces– due to Novel Coronavirus. Fourteen countries outside of China report 56 confirmed infections. The WHO is vivid about the fact that much is unknown about the virus as of yet.
A fine article from the Economist focuses on life in Wuhan, China since the outbreak, and more importantly it provides an overview of the central government's response. Much different than the SARS pandemic of 2003.

Finally, with thanks to Wayne Rutherford, school head of the International School of Milan, the New York Times offers a summary and perspective about the need for caution but not alarm-yet our concern should rightly be on the people in China, having much to do with the quality of health care. The WHO has yet to declare Novel Coronavirus a global health emergency. No question, it is a health emergency in China.
