Friday's Five Ideas for the Future October 4, 2019
"We are exploring together. We are cultivating a garden together, backs to the sun. The question is a hoe in our hands and we are digging beneath the hard and crusty surface to the rich humus of our lives."
"Leading with Intent" Can you think of a more powerful calculus than combining strength with wisdom to impact youth and the communities we serve? We can achieve more.
With knowledge, the board engages appropriately, is active with positive messaging across the community and takes seriously advancing the school. In other words, board development may be more about deep understanding and pride in the school's program and impact. A rather clear example of connecting strength with wisdom.
Now on to this Friday's Five... 1. "Leading with Intent" offers a set of findings about important opportunities and challenges for reflection and change within individual boards. Also important is that the findings can help your school's nominating committee seek trustees by prioritizing skills and attitudes for a future-leaning board of trustees. 2. "Enduring power is found in giving it away. Your power expands as you empower others." Learn about the power paradox from Dacher Keltner. Dacher will be a featured Un-Keynoter at the 2020 AAIE Leadership CONVERSATION in New York City in February. 3. Dacher Keltner wrote a book about the power paradox, reviewed here by Maria Popova. "We rise in power and make a difference in the world due to what is best about human nature, but we fall from power due to what is worst." 4. From NAESP: You're a principal. Now what? This practical guidance will help new principals as they set the foundation for a long and rewarding career. Read the Webinar Recap or watch the full webinar, featuring presenter Jen Schwenke. 5. NAIS continues to provide excellent resources on cultivating diverse and inclusive communities. This resource guide of justice-focused tools, publications and events is a must for school leaders.
Poetry that Sustains the Courage to Lead Work Around Your Abyss
There is a deep hole in your being, like an abyss. You will never succeed in filling that hole, because your needs are inexhaustible. You have to work around it so that gradually the abyss closes.
Since the hole is so enormous and your anguish so deep, you will always be tempted to flee from it. There are two extremes to avoid: being completely absorbed in your pain and being distracted by so many things that you stay far away from the wound you want to heal. --Henri Nouwen
