A New AAIE Season Begins Status of 2019-2020 Membership
As of today we have 116 membership registrations, ahead of the same time last year. It appears that the change in our fee schedule has not created waves. To date we have had three questions and/or concerns about the change– yet with an explanation, all have joined or are still considering.
In the way of revenue with today's 116 members, (obviously we will vigorously go after membership and it is still early) we have actually brought in revenue that is 81% of total membership revenue from last year (2018-19 total revenue, $134,415 vs. year-to-date, $108,533) By the way, one year ago today the revenue inflows stood at $52,175, or we are 208% above revenue inflows of one year ago.
Also, and surprisingly, it is our members receiving the F3: "Friday's Five Ideas for the Future" that seems to be driving membership since we will require membership for anything online other than the basic web page presence. Please keep talking up membership.
Revised AAIE CONVERSATION 2020 Planning CLICK HERE to review a much revised concept map for the NYC AAIE 2020 Conversation. The changes are a product of listening. Being in attendance at the AISH summer session, the Leadership Seminar for Overseas Principals and the A/OS seminar for new heads of school all brought into focus better ideas to consider. As an example, I want to inject more panel discussions into the leadership learning schedule. And most importantly, people need to feel a bit less scheduled during the three days. So we're seeking to organize a night on Broadway and also an agenda for "Nights on the Town."
The concept of creating space in the schedule so we can gather to truly tackle leadership problems together remains in the schedule. (i.e. "Inclusion: Name that Fear")
Gerri-Ann is gathering a cadre of exhibitors into a partner advisory committee so we can ensure they are inside the tent with AAIE planning.
Have a look at the Concept Map, and let me know what you think.
Are There Next Steps For the AAIE/AISH White Paper?
One of the reasons I attended the AISH Summer Seminar was to fly the AAIE flag but also to follow-up on the AAIE/AISH Partnership White Paper. Very little was discussed with me. AISH president Chip Barder basically asked that Deb Welch follow-up later in the summer. She did. No doubt the White Paper received considerable discussion time at the board level. Without specifics to report, Deb opened her discussion with me by stating that it would be up to me to bring ideas to AISH, where the ideas must match AISH goals. Honestly, I do think that we made a pretty good case for a strategic partnership within the White Paper– yet AISH may not be too interested unless AAIE can make the case. Less collaborative with the brainstorming thing than I expected. Yet, to be sure, we can make the case for and grow the shared AISH and AAIE mentoring program to create a sense of shared benefit. So, we're starting small with every intention from the AAIE side to keep pressing for further discussion.
A/OS Grants for 2019-2020
Tom Shearer and I spoke several days ago and he confirmed a 30% increase in grant monies to AAIE. We will take on the new A/OS STEM learning program where the office is collaborating with the Tiger Woods Foundation (focused on training MS teachers). Tom has increased our conference support from 125K to 140K and we will build on the success of the Leadership Seminar for Overseas Principals (LSOP) in managing this A/OS and AAIE program for a second year. The Leading Together program will be increased from 42K to 62K for the coming year.

UPDATE on new AAIE Program Collaborative Activities Following up on our board discussions, we are seeking to expand services and elevate AAIE's stature as a leadership service provider. We're much more than a February conference and summer seminar. 1. Announcing AAIE's "The Leadership List"
This coming Wednesday, we will be rolling out "The Leadership List". It is a no-cost to members senior leadership recruiting tool where schools can advertise vacancies only for leadership positions. We believe this tool can serve as value-add for an AAIE member school. We will ensure prominent placement on our web page as well. 2. The AAIE "Thriving Youth and Healthy Communities Project" Goes to Asia
Playing to the success of our summer seminar on adolescence, child protection and social-emotional learning, we are going to Asia, tentatively scheduled for March 2020. In collaboration with A/OS and EARCOS, our goal is to bring in senior leaders and counselors from key Asian schools. REO, Larry Hobdell is leading the program for A/OS.
3. The "Leading Together" Head of School and Board Chair Curriculum Goes to CEESA
With Kathy Stetson in the lead, our leadership curriculum effort called "Leading Together", a collaborative effort between A/OS, NESA and AAIE, completed here in Princeton will be piloted at the CEESA board training seminar on October 11-13. Rick Detwiler and David Chojnacki will facilitate the seminar. A spring 2020 "Leading Together" seminar is also being planned for Europe.
4. A Hand-hold for New and Long-Serving School Heads
We are working to broaden the opportunity for school heads, whether new to the position or ready for renewal, to gather and discuss leadership challenges, expectations and the changing dimensions for leading a future-ready school. Our own Barry DeQuanne and Lee Fertig are considering several dates in November 2019 for a Brussels-based seminar. Timing is meant to catch new heads and long-serving heads, when life as a leader is heating up and when mutual mentoring can help and support.
5. An Expanded Mentorship Program in Collaboration With AISH
Working closely with Deb Welch of AISH, the mentoring program is being expanded to include all school heads, new and highly experienced. We all need to wake up to our leadership blind spots. Currently we have 19 mentor-mentee relationships in play. On a personal note, Tom Boasberg, the new superintendent of Singapore American School, has asked me to serve as his mentor. Not sure who will learn more. And Finally... AAIE fully financed the purchase of a marble bench in honor of Dr. RIchard Krajczar as part of the stateside Celebration of Life, held in Wyoming this summer. Sherry, Everett and I have been in close contact over the summer months, and I wanted you to know that AAIE is providing a tangible and lasting reminder of Dick's contributions to international education and the lives of countless students, teachers and leaders.
All Good Wishes,
Mark
