Dear AAIE Community,

Leadership Conversations as a Tool for Making Sense of it All

Consider that we are the lucky ones, where the world is our school and diversity of people and perspectives our teacher.  And the expertise, talent and insight for continually improving our leadership work is right here, within our AAIE community. Such thinking guides the AAIE February 3-6, 2019 Leadership Conference CONVERSATION

We have so much to learn from each other.  Just as we must never compromise our focus on both the head and heart of AAIE– this year's gathering pushes us as leaders toward "Being on Time for the Future" and for us to leave after four days of wall-to-wall leadership learning awake to new ideas, ways of thinking and fresh possibilities for our international schools.

The AAIE May 2018 Leadership Challenge Rankings

  1. Board Trustee and Head of School Relationship,
  2. Teacher Impact on Student Learning,
  3. Strategic Planning and the Future of Teaching, Learning and Inclusion
  4. Student Life and Learning Outcomes
  5. Change Leadership and Educational Innovation
  6. School Advancement-Marketing, Communication, Fundraising and Facilities
  7. Host Country and School Community Relationships
  8. School Finance and Resources
  9. The Head of School's Dilemmas-Time and Demands

You shared your top three leadership challenges in May 2018.  The NINE key leadership issues that bubbled up are at the heart of the conference organization, schedule, topics and content.  So, it is your thinking, your leadership success stories and also the sleepless nights of grappling with leadership challenges that guide this year's AAIE leadership CONVERSATION.

Pay special attention to what is new, different and maybe a bit unconventional about this year's AAIE February gathering:

PRECONFERENCES:  Saturday and Sunday, February 2-3,  Eight sense-making preconferences, all connected to the leadership challenge themes (stay tuned for the sign-up next week)-plan your travel accordingly.

THE Un-KEYNOTE ADDRESS:  Check your phones and reticence at the door, this is a listen and then debate session with all of us learning together.  We'll move, group, re-group and co-create new metaphors for our schools.  This is the new AAIE.  Welcome to the Un-Keynote. (kb)

HEADTALKS:  Eighteen minute provocations from colleagues and thought leaders, everyone sharing in the "wake-up" call.

KEY CONVERSATIONS:  60 minutes in small groups taking on the sticky wickets within the nine key leadership challenge themes.  A time to unlearn and adopt a fresh perspective on the issues that vex, confound, stymie or defy a ready solution in our leadership lives.

DEEPER DIVES: Talk is one thing, active and creative problem-solving is another.  A time to bring our shared expertise to the issues that are in search of solutions or next steps.

We all have our hill to climb– taking on the challenges in our leadership life that keep us up at night.  San Francisco in February is meant to be a riot of ideas and possibilities connected to the collective wisdom of everyone gathered together to define possible solutions or next steps. And please note that this year's conference is a stripped down version, where the focus is squarely on the leadership challenges you have identified. A classic approach to less is more.

Now take a test drive and navigate your way around the AAIE "CONVERSATION"offerings over FOUR very cool leadership learning days in San Francisco, February 3-6, 2019.  Make sure your membership and conference registration are timely and arranging hotel reservations ASAP at the Hyatt Regency is important too.

Be quick to ask questions, offer ideas and to share the good news that you too are joining this year's leadership learning conversation– the best sense-making tool of all.

On behalf of our Board of Trustees,

All good wishes,

Kevin Glass, AAIE President
Mark Ulfers, AAIE Executive Director
