Dear All

Finally – after much delay – the summary on the responses to my questions on Baggage allowances etc.

My thanks to Barbara Butterworth who forwarded the results of a similar survey she had done some time ago – that swelled the number of responses considerably.

There is a wide variety in allowances.

An average contract provides:

Freight allowance of a maximum of US $ 2000 US (Single)

US $ 2750 US (Teaching Couple) + US $ 500 for each dependent up to 3 dependents.

These allowances apply at the beginning of contract and at the end of service.

In the overwhelming majority of cases, a first contract is for 2 years.

A. Allowances for freight $$$:

30 schools respond with amounts quoted as US $ or Euros. Taken as one sample group (with Euros being = +/- to US $) yielded the following:

Offers ranged from US $0,(1 school)  to US $10,000(1 school),- per family including in and out freight and tickets.
The remaining 28 schools offer between US $ 300 to US $ 4700 for single teachers on arrival

Average of US $ 1811

Mode US $ 2500

Median US $ 1500

For single teachers on departure

Average of US $ 2011

Mode US $ 2500

Median US $ 1700

For a teaching couple on arrival

Average of US $ 2630

Mode US $ 4000

Median US $ 2200

For a teaching couple on departure

Average of US $ 2550

Mode US $ 4000

Median US $ 2200

B. Allowances for freight Weight:

6 schools gave a weight allowance:

Average for single teacher 400 kg for both arrival and departure.

Average for a teaching couple 650 kg for both arrival and departure.

C. Allowances for freight Cubic Metres:

5 schools gave a cubic metre allowance:

Single teacher either 2 cubic metres (3 schools) or 6 cubic metre (2 schools) for both arrival and departure.

Teaching couples (5 schools)  2, 4, 5, 10 and 10 cubic metres respectively for both arrival and departure.

D. Allowances Lump Sum

6 schools give a lump sum, but do not state how much.

CONCLUSIONS:

There are 2 basic groups of schools - either high benefit or low benefit range.

The high difference between mode and median indicates a clear division between the two groups, which is supported by the high standard deviations (not quoted here)

E. DURATION OF FIRST CONTRACT

12 schools have an initial contract of 2 years, 1 school has an initial contract of 3 years. The rest did not respond to this question.

F: RENEWAL BONUSES

There were 20 schools who answered this question.

12 do not offer a renewal bonus. 8 schools give a type of bonus. There are schools who give a bonus for each year at the school, others for each extra year.

The amounts range from US $ 200 per year to US $ 500 per year.

One school gives a lump sum of US $ 200, another of US $ 1000 and a third of US $ 1680.

G: ALLOWANCES FOR ACCOMPANYING DEPENDENTS

17 schools reported giving types of allowances for children.

In these schools a dependent gets approximately 1/3 of the allowance of a single teacher.

Most schools have limited allowances to two or three dependents.
