Subject: HELP SUMMARY
Dear Colleagues,
Thank you all for your quick and comprehensive answers to my two questions
regarding Teacher Evaluations and the role of the PTA.
I received 28 responses: All but one were seriously opposed to the idea of
letting THE BOARD review the evaluations. A couple of you suggested there
might be a "personnel committee" (of Board members) that could possibly look
at them, but the vast majority of respondents said something to the effect
that THE BOARD hires the Superintendent and the Superintendent hires all
other staff. It is not within the Role of the Board to be evaluating
teachers. The only person the Board evaluates is the Superintendent.
One other comment was that the Board, in the end, can do whatever it damn
well chooses to do! I guess then you reevaluate your position as
Superintendent of that particular school.
One Head mentioned having the THREE LETTERS ready to go. I remember hearing
that advice at one time but cannot remember the contents of the three
letters. Can someone remind me what those letters contain??
The PTA drew a less heated reaction. Some school have PTA's...others
don't...thanks to those who sent me copies of their by-laws or their ideas
about the role of a PTA in the school. I can forward those materials to
Heads who might like to have copies of them on file.
Let me know if you want them and I will forward them to you.
Again, many thanks for all your thoughts on these two topics. You have, once
again, been most helpful...and reinforced the value of this communication
sytem!
Looking forward to seeing many of you "on the trail" in February.
Best regards,
Tom Tunny, Superintendent
