Dear Headnetters,
Many thanks to all of you who responded to the Board Recognition topic. It seems to have ht a responsive chord. It appears I am not the only one who was feeling some guilt pangs.
I also want to dispel any notion that I am some kind of saint and do all of the 7 things I mentioned in my initial message. I wish I did - then i might not feel so guilty.
Here is the summary. Items 1 - 7 were in the original message and several of you mentioned these or variations on them as well.
1. Birthday cards
2. Thank you notes after completion of a particularly successful project
3. A surprise goodie to eat at a Board meeting
4. Certificates of recognition when people leave the Board –
one person said the
5. End of year reception
6. Spoken word of thanks - many of you said this was the best
7. Awarding Board members the privilege of personally presenting the diploma to their own child - on stage at graduation
8. Featuring Board members in local and/or school publications with acknowledgement of their many contributions - the fact they are volunteers who give up a great deal of their time to assist the school
9. Special invitations to school events
10. Presenting them with items from the school store - sweat shirts, pens, mugs, etc.
11. Gift certificate from a local store
12. Many public THANKS - many of you mentioned this in various forms - one person said whenever possible at school events or other occasions
13. After graduation dinner
14. Pen and pencil set engraved with name and dates of service upon departure from the Board
15. Several people mentioned the idea of a special departure gift unique to the school´s location - the item becomes a tradition and is awarded in some type of special ceremony.
16. Special inexpensive fun gifts at Halloween, Valentine´s Day and Christmas
17. Board retreat/training in a nice place
18. Share a simple meal at each Board meeting - sort of a Break Bread Together Tradition
19.Post 8 X 10 photographs of Board members in a prominent place - Wall of Honor - present the pictures to them when they leave the Board.
20. Invite students to Board meetings to make presentations
21. Send Board members to a regional conference or some other gathering where other Board members are in attendance
Thank you again for your input. I hope these ideas help all of us to do a bit more to thank our Board members. Best of luck as you wrap up your school years.
