Thanks for all the replies.  There seems to be no common policy, but here are the results:

 

5 schools keep records 10 years

1 school keeps records 7 years

1 school keeps records 5 years

7 schools keep permanent records mostly because either they have no specific

policy or because they are required by law to do so (one has legal requirement for 65 years)

 

One of the schools responding has a very specific list of records it keeps

for 10 and 5 years, and one keeps lists of all students, but only keeps rest

of records for a definite time.  All the schools keeping records for 10

years have them on disk. Most of the others are moving in that direction.
