AAIE - ISCA Webinar

Netflix's controversial adaptation of Jay Asher's book, 13 Reasons Why, created chaos for schools and counselors coping with guidance and discussions about teen suicide.  As it was released globally and accessible to all Netflix users, many schools did not realize the impact it would have on International Schools.   It is clear, this media phenomenon needs to be addressed for leadership and counselors to better enable their work with students, parents and the community.

As a means to begin this process, AAIE partnered with International Schools Counseling Association (ISCA), and Nova Southeastern University professor and internationally recognized suicide expert, Dr. Scott Poland to hold a world wide webinar to address these concerns. The focus of the presentation was to point out inaccuracies, and create a toolbox to help schools not only deal with the effects of the show but to ensure all schools are ready to deal with teen suicide, depression, sexual assault and bullying.
This extremely well-attended and recorded webinar is hosted on ISCA's website along with a list of resources and suggestions for use in your schools.  During the hour-long session, Dr. Poland encouraged adults in the building to never shy away from the conversations (abuse, self harm, suicide, etc), but to ensure that there is a process to protect students from harm.  Most importantly never leave a student alone and never let a student leave the school without speaking to professionals, parents, and/or other social service agencies in your country if suicide is a risk.

As the show has been one of Netflix's best discussed show on social media, they plan to offer a Season 2, which is important for schools to know to enable them to be prepared.  As part of this please review many of the suggested links and resources listed on the ISCA website as well as speak to your school's librarian who would no doubt have additional resources and experience with dealing with challenging literature. AAIE will be offering a follow-up Webinar in the autumn, so watch your inbox for more information in the coming months.

Bavarian International School e.V.

The Bavarian International School e.V. (BIS) was established in 1990 to offer a full-day education in English to children from the international community in Munich. We opened in February 1991 with 6 students and in the following years we have grown to a two-campus school with a steadily increasing enrolment of 1,090 students, representing approximately 52 nations.

Our Haimhausen Campus is situated in a beautiful park-like setting with fields and woods surrounding the school premises. The focal point is a centuries old castle, which creates a unique learning environment for students from EC1 (4-5 year olds) to Grade 12.

The City Campus is a newly renovated facility in Munich and offers students in EC1 to Grade 5 a central Munich location and access to all the cultural offerings the city has to offer.

Grade 12 graduates can qualify for an IB Diploma that will allow access to the best universities and colleges worldwide. BIS also awards a US-style High School Diploma to its graduates. Grade 10 students can qualify for the MYP Certificate, which has been recognized in Germany as a "Mittlerer Schulabschluss".

We are an IB World School, authorised by the International Baccalaureate Organisation (ibo.org) to teach the International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Programme (PYP), the Middle Years Programme (MYP), and the Diploma Programme (DP).

Overseas School Research provides schools with a turnkey school satisfaction survey specifically for overseas schools. Instead of spending valuable time, money, and resources to complete an in-house school survey, let Overseas School Research take care of everything for you. We will implement, analyze, and provide an easy-to-read report in just a few weeks.

Better Survey. Our survey has many cutting-edge features that make it the best choice for overseas schools. The online survey was written specifically for overseas schools, includes three separate surveys (parent, staff, and student version), it has been vetted by teachers, parents, students, and international educational experts, and it can be completely customized to fit the needs of your schools. In addition, the parent version can be translated into the local language to increase validity and response rates. The survey has 46 statements from 9 categories; Mission and Leadership, Strategic Plan, Communication, Guidance, Instruction, Facilities, Academics I, Academics II, and Additional questions provided by the school. We use a five point Likert scale measuring agreement with each statement.

Better Analysis. In addition to the response rates for each of the statements, we offer custom analytics to compare 5 sets of data (parent, staff, student, school, and world), benchmarking, trend analysis, inferential statistics (significant differences), and a qualitative analysis of comments.

Better Report. Our report provides the detail needed to make informed decisions but also share with your entire community. The report includes an executive summary and major findings. For each category, you will receive a summary page with the response rates of each statement and significant differences between parents, staff, students, and the entire school community. Each individual statement includes response rates, benchmarking, trend analysis, and pertinent comments from each of the three surveys. The report is easy-to-read yet detailed.

Spring 2017 Special!! Get the Staff Survey free this spring.  Get in on this limited offer before it's too late.

Regional Member Spotlight:

CEESA

What is CEESA?

The Central & Eastern European Schools Association (CEESA) was founded as a result of the growth of American and International Schools in Central and Eastern Europe. In many cases, the schools were geographically isolated from each other and from the main stream of American and International Education.

CEESA was formed to broaden the horizons of schools and to promote professional growth. CEESA is your KEY to unlock professional development in the region. In addition to the CEESA Annual Conference in March, CEESA sponsors regional workshops, institutes and meetings to foster professionalism,

scholarship, and a deeper understanding of improvements for leading, teaching and learning. A unique offering of our association is that CEESA sponsors student activities, focusing on a variety of academic and non-academic areas, and a full schedule of sports events. Please see our website for more information on this and other great CEESA membership benefits!
