KEYNOTE SPEAKERS:

 

 “Drive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us”:  DANIEL PINK. Daniel H. Pink is the author of "A Whole New Mind" which reveals the six abilities white-collar workers must master to survive in an outsourced, automated, upside-down world. His new book, Drive:  The Surprising Truth About What Motivates Us, will be published by the end of the year.  Daniel Pink is a Contributing Editor at Wired. His articles on business and technology have also appeared in The New York Times, Harvard Business Review, Fast Company, and other publications.

 

“2020 Forecast:  Creating The Future of Learning”:  DR. MONICA MARTINEZ..  Dr. Martinez is President, New Tech Network, an organization that helps schools to rethink their approach to teaching and learning, empowering students to become the creators, leaders, and producers of tomorrow.  Prior to being named President of New Tech Network, Dr. Martinez was Vice President for Educational Strategy at the Knowledge Works Foundation.

 

THE FUTURE: 

 

“Without a Map of the Future, You May Not Know Where You Are Going”: THOMAS L. HAWKINS.  Dr. Tom Hawkins has been at IS Beijing since 2002, assuming the role of Head of School in 2005.  Tom has been in education for nearly 25 years, spending 15 of those years in international schools in Turkey, Norway, and China.  Along with the Board of Trustees at ISB, Tom has developed a highly successful model of Good to Great for schools and the first Map of the Future for international schools.  Tom is also a board member of EARCOS and AISH.

 

“2020 Forecast: Altered Bodies and Amplified Organization” , “2020  Forecast:  Platforms for Resilience and a New Civic Discourse” & “2020 Forecast: The Maker Economy and Pattern Recognition” (3 sessions):  KATHERINE PRINCE & JESSE MOYER. Katherine Prince is Director of Operations for the Institute for Creative Collaboration at Knowledge Works, a team that works to build the capacity of groups to think, learn, and work in new ways that support innovation and the creation of a world of learning.  Jesse Moyer serves as State Coordinator at the Institute for Creative Collaboration.  He develops research, knowledge, and strategic learning experiences around the 2020 Forecast.

 “Micro-Finance for Macro-Learning: School Partnerships for the “Collective Global Good”: SEAN LYNCH. Educated at Yale, Oxford and Sciences Po-Paris, Sean Lynch is Director of the American Section of the Lycée International in St. Germain-en-Laye, France, a K-12 school within a school that provides the American component of a bilingual education for 710 students.

LEADERSHIP & SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT:

 

“Recruiting Stars” & “A Two Week Fellowship Program for Growth and Renewal” (4 sessions) PEARL ROCK KANE. Dr. Kane holds a number of prestigious titles—Klingenstein Family Chair Professor of Education in the Department of Organization and Leadership at Teachers College Columbia University, Director of the Klingenstein Center for Independent School Leadership, and Advisor for Master’s degree programs focusing on school leadership.  She is an accomplished presenter and trainer.  Dr. Kane will offer four sessions on this topic.

 

“5 Forks in the Road to School Vitality”:  DAVID HAZELWOOD.  David Hazelwood’s consulting with over 500 colleges, schools, and religious institutions has taken him to all fifty states and Latin America to work with boards and CEOs.  He brings practical experience in strategic management, marketing and finance gained as owner of four businesses.  His MBA studies at Vanderbilt focused on management of non-profits.

 

“101 Ways to Cope With A Bad Economy”: JON FRERE. Jon Frere is a consultant and speaker/presenter with expertise in strategic thinking and planning, fund raising, governance, athletic program planning and sportsmanship.  A former independent school head, he now regularly consults with U.S. independent schools and international schools. 

 

“The Morfosis Leadership Paradigm:  A Practitioner’s Approach”: STEFANOS GIALAMAS.  Dr. Gialamas is the President of the American Community School of Athens – ACS Athens, Greece.  Prior to his arrival at ACS he served as Provost of the American College of Thessaloniki, Greece.  He also served as Dean/Vice President of Academic Leaders, Faculty and Instruction at DeVry University, USA.  Dr. Gialamas’ professional work includes research and teaching in Leadership Development.  Peggy Peloni is Dean of Student Affacies at ACS, and is currently pursuing a doctorate.

 

“ Who Are Our Schools For?”:  KEVIN BARTLETT & KRISTEN PELLETIER.  Kevin Bartlett is the Director of the International School of Brussels.  He chaired the European Council of International Schools (ECIS) Accreditation Committee, is a trainer for the Principals’ Training Center, and has lectured for a number of post graduate programs.  He initiated and later chaired the IB Primary Years Programme,, and is currently Chair of the Board of the Council of International Schools.  Kristen Pelletier has taught students with special needs for fourteen years.  With a specialization in special needs/learning support, a master’s degree in educational leadership, and a passion for supporting kids who learning differently, since 2006 she has been leading the ISB school-wide learning support team develop a range of inclusive support services with a multidisciplinary team approach.  She advocates for inclusive international school communities as a member of the European Council of International Schools Special Needs Committee, and as a consultant to other international schools.

 

 “Five Keys to Developing and Implementing on International School Master Plan”:  ALAN ROSS & JOHN JOHNSTON.  Alan Ross of Flansburgh Architects, has over 25 years of experience in master planning and architectural and interior design at a wide variety of K-12 schools.  He maintains a career-long commitment to environmentally sustainable design, contributing to several publications and books on the subject.  John Johnson is the President of International College in Beirut, Lebanon.  Previously he has served as an administrator at Cairo American College and the International School of Kuala Lumpur.  John has been involved in numerous school building projects.

 

“How to Publish in InterED, The Flagship of AAIE”: JOHN J. KETTERER & GILBERT BROWN. John J. Ketterer is the Executive Director of the International Endowment Foundation, Inc. and Director of International Programs at Jacksonville State University in Alabama. Dr. Ketterer is also the Associate Editor of The International Forum of Teaching and Studies, and a member of the editorial review board of The Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration.  The past few years he has been Editor for Research for AAIE’s InterED publication, and will soon assume the position of InterED Editor.   Gilbert Brown has been Head of School at the American School of Rio de Janeiro and Lincoln School in San Jose, Costa Rica. He is a former AAIE president and president of the Association of American Schools in South America (AASSA). He has authored a number of books, and served as InterED Editor.  Since retiring in 1993 he has consulted with more than 90 international schools, and presented numerous times at various regional seminars for American International Overseas School Board members.

 

“Tomorrow’s Learning Environments Today:  Planning a Tranformational Future”:  GAYLAIRD CHRISTOPHER.  Gaylaird Christopher is a recognized expert in the planning and design of educational facilities.  His experience in more than thirty years of practice encompasses individual buildings and institutional master plans.  A lecturer to numbers educational and architectural organizations, Mr. Christopher has also authored papers on innovations in educational architecture and creative fundraising techniques, and each year teaches a class at the University of California, Riverside entitled: “Schools for the Future:  Matching Design to Curriculum”.

 

“New IRS Form 990: Impact on International School Not-For-Profit Foundations”: RALPH JAHR & ANTHONY MAIMONE.  Ralph Jahr is a former international school administrator and teacher who came to International School Services in 1999 as Vice President to head the ISS Director/Head of School Recruiting Service.  He also oversees the ISS human resources department, 501 (c)(3) foundation management program, and the Princeton office operations.  Mr. Anthony J. Maimone is the Chief Compliance Officer of International School Services since March of 2009.  He was previously Corporate Compliance Director for Hovnanian Enterprises and since 1990 has held various positions in the financial sector.

 

GOVERNANCE:

 

“Edition Three of the CIS Policy Planner and Its Use”:  GAIL D. SCHOPPERT & ALAN CONKEY. Gail Schoppert worked outside the U.S. for 35 years, including 19 years as Director of international schools in Kuala Lumpur, The Hague, Warsaw, and Rotterdam.  He has also served as board member at two schools, and is currently in his third three year term as board member for the American Farm School of Thessaloniki, Greece.  Now semi-retired, Dr. Schoppert consults to international schools on boardsmanship, policy updates, strategic planning, compensation, and other matters.  Alan Conkey began his overseas career teaching at the John F. Kennedy Schule in West Berlin in 1980, and then spent nineteen years as head of four international schools.  A founding member and president of the Central and Eastern European Schools Association, Alan also served on the European Council of International Schools board, and on the board of the Academy for International School Heads.  Currently he is a full-time Senior Governance Consultant with the Council of International Schools, travels worldwide presenting On-Site Governance and Partnership Governance Workshops, and also works with schools on special projects especially in the areas of policy development and leadership.

 

 “School Board Basics:  10 Things to Have in Place”:  CLARK KIRKPATRICK.  Clark Kirkpatrick is currently an independent American and international schools consultant.  He was CEO of the Academy for International School Heads from March 2000 to January 2007.  Kirkpatrick was Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership at Minnesota State University Mankato from 1999 – 2001.  As a presenter/speaker he has worked with National Academy of School Executives of AASA, ECIS,EARCOS, AASSA,  CEESA, Tri-Association, MSBA, MASA, and MESPA, among others.

 

“Accreditation Governance Standards:  Taking a Close Look”,  Representatives of various accrediting agencies will each share their respective governance standards.  This will be followed by a question/answer session and facilitated discussion.

 

 

TECHNOLOGY :

 

“ISTE’s Global Student Learning Standards for the Digital Age”:  DON G. KNEZEK & LYNN N. NOLAN.  Don Knezek is recognized internationally for his leadership in transforming education with technology.  Don is CEO of the international Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and Co-Chair of ISTE’s National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) Project.  Lynn Nolan’s background encompasses extensive professional experience in the field of education locally, nationally, and globally.  She presently serves as the Senior Strategic Initiatives Officer for the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), and also serves as the Program Chair for the International Conference on Teaching and Learning with Technology.

 

“K-12 Online Learning:  An International Perspective”:  ALLISON POWELL.  Allison Powell is the Vice President of the International Association for K-12 Online Learning which provides expertise and leadership in K12 Online Learning. She has been working in the field of online learning for the past ten years. She has served on several boards for various organizations, and is finishing her doctorate in educational technology leadership from Pepperdine University.

 

“Introduction to AAIE’s New Community Website”:  WILLIAM THOMAS.  Bill Thomas has spent the last 40 years in the employer and association business providing products and serves to employees and association members.  His primary focus is on bringing the new social networking tools to serious  purposes.

 

“Online Learning for International Schools”:  DARBY CARR. Darby Carr is the Headmaster of K12 International Academy an accredited, diploma-granting private school serving students in the U.S. and around the world in grades K-12.  Darby has over 15 years experience in the charter school movement as an advocate for school reform and school choice.  Darby served as the Head of School for K12’s pioneer Virtual Academy in Pennsylvania, she directed the K12 Accountability Program which included both school improvement planning and quality assurance visits to K12 Virtual Academies across the U.S.  Most recently, Darby was leader of K12’s virtual high school offering, working on the development and implementation of this new and exciting academic program.  

 

CURRICULUM & INSTRUCTION:

 

“Rethinking ESL Policies, Programs, & Practices for English Learners in International Schools“: VIRGINIA ROJAS. Dr. Rojas is an ASCD faculty member and independent consultant across North America and in international schools around the world.  She is author of Strategies for Success with English Language Learners:  An Action Toolkit for Classroom and ESL Teachers (2007) and a forthcoming ASCD DVD series and book focusing on current research-based ESL practices.  Dr. Rojas teaches EAL for Mainstream Teachers at the Teachers Training Center (www.thettc.org)

 

“Small Room - Grand Designs: Starting an English Resource and Tutoring Center in Qatar”:  MARCI BROWN.  Marci Brown has taught English at the Qatar Foundation Academic Bridge Program (ABP) for the past two years.  She holds a Master of Fine Arts degree from Antioch University, and before working at ABP founded a school in Greece.

“Practical ESL Strategies for International Administrators and Teachers:  Sheltered Instruction and Beyond”:  ROBERT H. SUMMERS.  Robert Summers is the director of International Programs at the University of Alabama.  He directs seminars on Educational Linguistice, TESOL, and Foreign Language Education.  His primary area of research is the intersection of second language assessment. . Vyugotskian-inspired pedagogy and computer assisted language learning(CALL).  He has experience in the establishment and teaching of distance education and has more recently focused his research on the applications of technologies to foreign and second language pedagogy.

 

“Making Sense of Curriculum for American/International Schools”, WARNA GILLIES. Dr. Gillies is a former middle school teacher and overseas School Director. Since 1998 she has served as a member of SACS/CASI accrediting teams for 14 American/International Schools.  She has also authored numerous articles on leadership and on third culture kids.  Currently she is an Assistant Professor at Bowie State University working with doctoral students in Educational Leadership. 

 

“How to Think More Productively:  The Six Hats Parallel Thinking Method”  and “How to Talk to Boards about AP   (Two sessions)  ROBERT DIYANNI.  Dr. DiYanni is Director of International Services for the College Board, where he helps provide service and support for international schools that use College Board programs and services.  He is also adjunct Professor of Humanities at New York University where he teaches courses in literature, critical thinking and interdisciplinary humanities.  Author and editor of more than thirty books, he is a frequent conference and a workshop presenter on the international circuit.

 

“Global Issues Network goes GLOBAL!”: LINDA SILLS, TIM CARR & CLAYTON LEWIS.  Linda Sills in her role as the Program Development Director for the Global Issues Network (GIN) is working in cooperation with The Washington International School and AAIE to create a global GIN network. Clayton Lewis has administered international schools in London, the Hague, Luxembourg, and is now head of the Washington International School.  In 2003 he and his colleagues at the International School of  Luxembourg launched the Global Issues Network based upon ideas of Jean-Francois Rischard, an endeavor not involving more than 100 schools.  Mr. Lewis is a member of the ECIS Board of Trustees.

Tim Carr is Headmaster at the American International School of Japan.  Previously he was General Director of The Country Day School in Costa Rica, and has worked in a number  of international school positions in Brazil, Tanzania, Sri Lanka, and India.

“Calvert International:  Global Excellence in Education for Over a Century”:  JEAN HALLE.

Jean Halle, a nationally recognized education business strategist has served at the helm of Calvert Education Services for eight years. Her insightful approaches have been featured in articles and commentaries in Education Week and numerous other publications and she has appeared on CBS Sunday Morning and CBS Marketwatch Weekend. Ms. Halle’s many accomplishments at Calvert include the development of Verticy Learning, the first distance learning program designed to serve the needs of students with language based learning differences; alignment of Calvert’s curriculum to national and state standards and securing accreditation from a host of prestigious organizations. 

 

“Creating and Utilizing Collaborative Structures to Focus on Student Learning”: LEE FERTIG & SUE EASTON. Lee Fertig is the Superintendent of Graded School in São Paulo, Brazil. Lee has 25 years of administrative and teaching experience in a wide variety of educational settings. Sue Easton has been an educator for the past twenty years in Canada, Australia and Spain, including teaching K – 10, special needs, being a school administrator for five years, and a Learning Coordinator for a district of 180 schools.

 

 “Global Student Voices”:  LINDA  SILLS will moderate a panel of Global Issues Network Alumni who will share the ways in which the GIN experience has impacted on their lives, and learning.

 

“ Kids in Crisis, Families in Need”: SANDY FURTH has a MS degree from the University of Utah with a teaching certificate in Educationaly Handicapped from the University of Colorado. She has taught for over 20 years in Colorado, Japan, Malaysia and England and has experience as a regular educator as well as a Learning Disabilities specialist. World Student Support was launched due to queries from a variety of international schools and their heads regarding students who need to locate additional resources.

  

STAFF  TRAINING & EFFECTIVENESS

 

 “Building Peace Education Through Teacher Education”:  BEVERLY D. SHAKLEE.  Dr. Beverly Shaklee is Director of the Center for International Education and Professor of Curriculum and Instruction at George Mason University.  The Center for International Education (CIE) focuses on research and development of K12-university international education.  Dr. Shaklee also serves as academic coordinator for MASON-FAST TRAIN programs that have graduated over 1000 international teachers who serve in over forty countries. 

 

“Building a Process to Evaluate Teacher Effectiveness:  an OSAC Project”:  WILLIAM JOHNSTON.  Dr. Bill Johnston received his undergraduate degree from Dickinson College and his Master’s and Doctorate from Virginia Tech.  He has been in international education for 24 years, 19 of them as a school director and all but one of them in Latin America, and in the U.S. public education system for 13 years. Dr. Johnston is the Director of Cotopaxi Academy in Quito, Ecuador and serves on the Boards of AAIE, AASSA, AISH, Junior Achievement Ecuador and is currently President of the Ecuadorian-American Chamber of Commerce.

 

 “Teacher Internships in a Multicultural Environment”: DR. CINDY EMMANS.  Cindy C. Emmans, Ed.D., is currently a professor at Bahrain Teachers College, a division of the University of Bahrain.  She has worked with international schools as well as US-based schools in a variety of positions from grant writer to curriculum developer to dean, and is experienced in both online and traditional situations.  Her specialty is teacher in-service and pre-service education, particularly in the area of technology.

“Great PD at Half-Price”:  ART CHARLES.  Art Charles has worked as an administrator and teacher in international schools as well as public and independent schools in the United States.  His most recent post was as President of International College, a PK-12 school for 3400 students in Beirut, Lebanon.  Art also teaches courses in International Educational Administration for Endicott College and Lebanese American University, works as a senior search consultant for Carney, Sandoe & Associates finding administrators for international schools, and serves as a commissioner for the Commission on American and International Schools Abroad of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges.

 

“A  Coaching Program That May Be Working, BILL GERRITZ.  Bill Gerritz is currently Head of School at International School Bangkok.  He has been a grade 1 teacher, a faculty member at the University of California, Berkeley and a researcher at the Far West Labs for Educational Research.  Since going into international education he has held leadership positions at Escuela Campo Alegre in Caracas, The International School of Curacao, and The American School of the Hague.   He has also served as a board member so the Academy of International School Heads, the European Council of International Schools, the Council of International Schools, and the International School Association of Thailand.
